New Year, New Landscape: Tips for Winter Watering & Fertilization

Florida’s winter landscapes require protective measures to ensure year-round enjoyment. Experts at the University of Florida (UF/IFAS) say that during the cooler months, Florida’s plant growth slows or stops altogether. “Deciduous trees drop their leaves and turfgrasses often turn yellowish or slightly brown,” say experts, reassuring that this is completely normal. They warn that attempting to keep the grass green during this time can stress the lawn and cause damage. It’s important to let the grass rest and grow naturally.

Therefore, there’s really not much that needs to be done in terms of planning. Maintenance and adjustments to your irrigation system can help keep plant growth on track for spring. UF/IFAS writes that irrigation system scheduling should be reduced to running every 7-14 days and turned off completely when there’s rain. “Overwatering and fertilizing during the winter wastes water and fertilizer, and can cause fertilizer nutrients to wash into lakes, rivers, and the bay.”

As for fertilizers, the UF/IFAS recommends restraining from usage between November and late March/early April. Additionally, they warn against using “winterizing” products to maintain your landscape, explaining that many of these products are high in nitrogen and often lead to nutrient runoff. If you find that one of your plants has an obvious deficiency, revisit fertilization plans.
