Part 1: Top Florida Landscaping Mistakes
Plant Selection
Light, soil, and moisture conditions have a big impact on where plants need to be set. Paying attention to the conditions of your proposed landscape location can help the plants you choose live a long and happy life! The University of Florida (UF/IFAS) notes that, “for example, hydrangeas love shade and soil that is rich and well drained. If the desired location is full sun, high in clay, and tends to stay wet, your hydrangea will quickly deteriorate.”
Preparation
Another mistake is the failure to prepare a site before planting, which is often committed during landscaping installation at newly constructed sites. UF/IFAS writes that the “construction soil” that surrounds many newer houses most likely contain concrete, paint, adhesives, and grout. It’s important to prepare and amend this soil before you plant anything.
Additionally, you’ll want to look at proper drainage during the preparation stage. Your drainage grade should slope away from the house or commercial building so that it directs/redirects water into in-ground drainpipes.
