March Tips for North Florida Gardening
If gardening is part of how you present your Jacksonville landscape, you’ll want to know these tips for what to plant in the month of March:
Flowers & Bulbs
According to the University of Florida (UF/IFAS), you should try planting annuals, perennials, and wildflowers that are warm-season, such as:
- Angelonia
- Wax begonia
- Vinca
- Zinnia
Late March is also the time to begin planting bulbs for spring and summer flowering. Bulbs that thrive in North Florida’s environment include dahlias, canna, and gloriosa.
Herbs & Veggies
Warm-season vegetables should be planted early in the month for a late spring harvest. Take care to plant and protect these veggies from frost this March:
- Beans
- Tomatoes
- Squash
- Corn
UF/IFAS suggests planting herbs such as edible ginger in well-drained soil in full to part sun. Other herbs to plant during the month of March include:
- Basil
- Cilantro
- Garlic
- Parsley
- Anise
Additional tips:
- Azaleas: Prune when finished blooming to reduce size and improve form
- Shrubs and trees: Prune at the beginning of a new growth season
- Palms and shrubs: Fertilize palms, azaleas, camellias, and other ornamental shrubs as needed.
- Irrigation: Check sprinkler system
