Florida’s Growing Population & Water Usage

As the sunshine state’s population grows, so does its commercial development. As a result, subdivisions, roadways, and other projects are putting an increasing amount of pressure on Florida’s water resources. According to the Florida Nursery, Growers, and Landscape Association (FNGLA), these changes with added water demand are causing “droughts, heavy rainfall, and regional water restrictions” that call for a change in how we design and manage water resources.

Florida-Friendly Landscaping

One of the greatest tools that is already at our disposal is the UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping (FFL) Program. For decades, researchers at UF/IFAS have been building a practical guide for new development based on the following principles:

  • Right plant, right place
  • Efficient irrigation
  • Mulch use
  • Proper fertilization
  • Integrated pest management

All of these principles were created for the specific purpose of conserving water. “If applied during planning and construction, FFL practices can reduce potable water use in landscapes significantly compared to traditional designs, while maintaining aesthetic and functional value for property owners,” says UF/IFAS Center for Land Use Efficiency director Michael Dukes.

The Role of Trees

Data from UF/IFAS researchers also show that trees are of more importance to water conservation than we might think. Their research indicates that by properly selecting and maintaining trees, we can see significant environmental and economic benefits. Because trees help with air quality, the urban heat island effect, and intercept stormwater runoff, they can also help keep pollutants out of Florida waterways.

As far as economics go, experts at FNGLA say “their work also shows that tree canopy increases property values, provides shade that reduces home energy costs, and enhances the livability of our communities.”
